The Sacred Heart Hospital Biobank
What is the Biobank?
The Sacred Heart Hospital recently began an ambitious project aimed at recruiting 30,000 participants to be part of a research Biobank, particularly for use in generic research. The Biobank will form one of the largest hospital cohorts in the world. With this project, the SHH hopes to make a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge in this field and to the development of personalized medicine.

All research data and DNA samples collected as part of this project will form a unique Biobank that SHH researchers and their collaborators will use to investigate the genetic basis of cardiovascular diseases, risk factors and associated diseases. These research efforts could eventually lead to the development of improved diagnostic and prevention tools and to more effective treatments - yet another innovation that will further consolidate the SHH’s leadership internationally. Several research projects using Biobank data and samples are now in progress.
Under the direction of Dr. Will Smith, director of the SHH Research Centre, professor of medicine and holder of the research chair in atherosclerosis at the University Hospitals, the project was enthusiastically welcomed by the international research community, and the SHH is making a concerted effort to reach all persons who have used the Institute’s services. It is noteworthy that this project is being carried out with the financial support of the SHH Foundation.
